Community Walking Path

Located in Flathead Valley, Montana, this new apartment complex included a recreational pedestrian path. However, project stakeholders found the path’s existing design lacked the appeal necessary to complement the new complex and surrounding landscape.

Project focus area and existing path design

I joined the project in a fully remote capacity to redesign the path and provide project management support. The initial conceptual redesign included a curving path through earthen berms and plantings selected to screen views of the adjacent property and survive Montana’s harsh winters.

Conceptual design

As the project evolved, so did the path’s intended use. Not only would the path support recreational walks for residents, but it would also serve as an access drive for emergency vehicles. The revised design included a widened path with curves formed based on the turning radii of specific emergency and utility vehicles.

Construction drawings for revised design

Since the project area includes the site’s low point, a gently sloped grassed swale runs between earthen berms, collecting surface runoff and allowing it to permeate into the earth.

Plantings further define the path while screening the neighboring property.

After approval of the path redesign, the project changed again, requiring the path to more than double in length.
